Griffith Middle School Counselor (1994–2005)

The Griffith Educational Foundation is honored to recognize the life and legacy of Wayne Charles Slegel, whose family and friends chose to make memorial gifts in his honor. Their generosity will continue supporting Griffith students and educators—reflecting the values Wayne demonstrated throughout his career.

Wayne dedicated his life to education. After earning degrees from Ball State University and Bowling Green State University, he served students in several Indiana school corporations before joining Griffith Public Schools in 1994 as the Griffith Middle School counselor. He faithfully served Griffith students until his retirement in 2005.

Wayne had a special gift for connecting with young people. While many considered middle school one of the most challenging age groups, Wayne often shared how much he genuinely enjoyed working with middle school students. He was known for listening without judgment, offering thoughtful guidance, and making every student feel valued.

His influence reached far beyond the counseling office. Before coming to Griffith, Wayne developed a successful girls cross-country program in Warsaw, Indiana—one of his proudest accomplishments. In Griffith, he became affectionately known as "Stats Man Slegel" for his years of volunteering as statistician for the Griffith High School baseball program. Whether supporting student-athletes, mentoring young people, or simply being present for those who needed encouragement, Wayne quietly made a lasting impact on countless lives.

Outside of school, Wayne was an avid runner who completed three marathons, enjoyed cycling with his wife Lynn, loved basketball, and traveled extensively throughout the United States. His life reflected a commitment to service, learning, and helping others.

Remembering Wayne

"Wayne was a great person and mentor to many here at Griffith. His impact on our kids covered many different levels, from serving as a male role model for students who needed that influence in their lives, to volunteering as the statistician for our baseball program. He was loyal to our kids, always willing to offer advice and encouragement. Wayne carried himself with class but never took himself too seriously. As I reflect on my career at Griffith, I appreciate the influence Wayne had on so many of us and have so many fond memories."
